Plot summary
Brett Hanson steps out of prison into a world he no longer recognizes. He travels to his home ground in south Louisiana, hoping to reach his ex-wife May, though he has no way of knowing whether she would take him back. Two teenagers give him a lift. Martine, fifteen, has just run away from her family, and Gordy, an outcast, wants only to be accepted. Gordy is at the wheel of the convertible, and the three of them cross a Louisiana still marked by Hurricane Katrina while Brett weighs starting over against the chance of rekindling what he lost with May.
