Plot summary
Pero the cat lives in a feline village where saving mice breaks the law. Declared an outlaw, he escapes before he can be punished, and the Feline King sends three bumbling assassins after him. On the road Pero meets Pierre, a poor miller's son who has been turned out of his home. The pair travel the countryside together and reach a kingdom where a ceremony is under way to find a prince for the lonely Princess Rosa. Pero sees the boy as a candidate and hurries to the castle with a plan, though Pierre objects. Then Lucifer, an ogre sorcerer, arrives with a display of magic and promises of power if Rosa will be his bride. Rosa refuses, and Lucifer threatens the King with darkness unless she is surrendered within three days.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The 1969 film gave Toei Animation its mascot: the cat Pero now appears on the studio's primary logo at the start or end of some of its other animated features, and in 2016 a new 3D on-screen logo featuring Pero was revealed for the company's 60th anniversary.
- The film's most famous sequence, a chase across castle parapets animated in alternating cuts by Yasuo Ōtsuka and Hayao Miyazaki, became the model for similar sequences in Miyazaki's feature directorial debut Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro and The Cat Returns (2002).
- Key animators Yasuo Ōtsuka, Reiko Okuyama, Sadao Kikuchi, Yōichi Kotabe, Akemi Ōta, Hayao Miyazaki and Akira Daikubara, supervised by animation director Yasuji Mori, were assigned by scene rather than by character, an example of the Japanese model of division of labour in animation.
