Plot summary
Beth Boothby is a born-again pop singer from Texas who wears a purity ring, as does her fiancé Steve Thompson. They belong to Cowboys in Christ, a group that travels to heathen areas to preach Christianity. Before they leave, Beth sings at a small church, and the congregation wishes the couple well for the two years they will spend spreading the word in Scotland. The Reverend Moriarty sends them to Glasgow, where nobody accepts their pamphlets and the reception is hostile. Sir Lachlan Morrison and his wife Delia then invite the pair to Tressock, the small village in the Scottish Lowlands where Sir Lachlan is laird.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Wicker Tree (2011)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Robin Hardy wrote the part of Sir Lachlan Morrison for Christopher Lee, who had played Lord Summerisle in The Wicker Man. While filming the Hammer film The Resident in New Mexico, Lee injured his back tripping over power cables, so Hardy gave the role to Graham McTavish, who had been cast as the butler Beame, with Clive Russell taking over as Beame.
- In 2002, Hardy was developing a film called The Riding of the Laddie, a same-genre companion to The Wicker Man: Sean Astin had signed on as the male lead, with Christopher Lee, LeAnn Rimes and Vanessa Redgrave set for major roles. Lee had passed the screenplay to Astin while the two were making the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
- Hardy could not secure funding, so the film was canceled; he turned his screenplay into a novel, Cowboys for Christ, and then adapted the novel back into the screenplay that was used for The Wicker Tree.
- Joan Collins was set to play Lady Delia Morrison opposite Christopher Lee's Sir Lachlan, but when Lee was replaced by the much younger Graham McTavish, Collins was replaced by the younger Jacqueline Leonard.
- A planned April 2008 shoot in Dumfries and Galloway was stopped by the council a week before it began, for financial reasons; filming finally started in July 2009.
