Plot summary
Eugene, Oregon, 1933. Samuel Murphy is a widowed World War I veteran who cannot provide for his daughter Penny during the Great Depression. Evicted, he sells Penny's teddy bear, and plainclothes policemen provoke him into a fight. He is imprisoned and Penny goes to a children's home. Four months later he reaches the Deschutes County Convict Labor Camp, where inmates shorten their sentences by clearing roads. After Murphy moves a boulder, Warden Clancy invites him to his cabin. There, repairing the warden's Ford Model 18, Murphy says he fears Penny will become a ward of the state before he is freed. Clancy offers him early release for a dangerous job, and Murphy agrees. He asks three men from his bunk, Rankin, Singh and Olson, to join him, and the group travels to Taggert's gold mine at Klamath Falls.
