Plot summary
Gunner Boone is new to Pine Mills, Oregon. He draws a graphic novel about a detective who investigates his own death, rides his bike, and visits a bookstore to borrow detective stories and books about cancer, since his mother Mary has leukemia. His father Amos, a Marine, is rarely home and cannot connect well with him. Local kids pay Jo, a blue-haired girl who says she has seen the Water Man, and she shows a scar on her neck as proof. A fan of mysteries, Gunner tracks down an undertaker who believes the Water Man may hold the secret to immortality, then hires Jo to lead him to the ridge where she claims to have seen him. Carrying food and supplies, the two head into the forest.
