Plot summary
Varvara Vasilievna leaves St. Petersburg for a Siberian village where the people work in gold mining, and her arrival as the new teacher meets with little welcome. She settles in and gains the trust of the villagers, and among her pupils she finds Prov Voronov, a boy who comes through every examination for the gymnasium, only to be turned away by its director, who says a poor boy and an aristocrat's son would never share a desk. Varvara Vasilievna believes the time will come when Prov can continue his studies. Sergei Martynov, a Bolshevik she knew years earlier, arrives in the village after exile, still in love with her, and the two marry.
