Plot summary
Prokopych, an aging gemcutter in the Ural Mountains, is made by the landlord's bailiff to take on an apprentice. Most boys fail to grasp the soul of stone, but young Danilo shows a natural talent for shaping gems with patterns, and he soon passes his teacher. When the landlord returns from France, where he wagered with a marquess over whose casket is finer, he orders Prokopych to produce one that no one can take their eyes off. Danilo carves the malachite casket, and the landlord's wife then asks for a stone cup that looks exactly like a flower. Danilo works for months on it, paying little attention to his fiancée Katya, and an old craftsman warns him that those who see the legendary Stone Flower never return from the Mistress of the Copper Mountain's domain.
