Plot summary

Fyodor Soloveikov works as a machine operator and belongs to the Komsomol; on the collective farm he is counted an advanced worker. He marries Stesha, a girl from a neighboring village, and the two settle in the home of her parents, Silan Ryashkin and Alevtina Ryashkina. The older couple are firm opponents of collective farm life, and in that household, away from the farm, Fyodor feels stifled. Quarrels break out between the young husband and wife, and the old men add fuel to the discord. Stesha loves Fyodor, yet she will not go against her parents' will, and she has not the strength to leave their home and follow him. He gets no support from her.
