Plot summary
In the 1950s town of Cayuga, New Mexico, a high-school basketball game occupies the evening. Everett, a teenage disc jockey, is on the air at radio station WOTW, while his friend Fay Crocker starts her shift at the town switchboard. Earlier, the two tried out her new tape recorder, and Everett walked her to work. Listening in from the switchboard, Fay hears an unexplained signal break into Everett's broadcast. A woman phones to describe a large object hanging over her property, her voice fading under static. Fay passes word to Everett, who asks his listeners to call the station with anything they know about the signal.

- Director Andrew Patterson financed The Vast of Night himself with money he earned producing commercials and shorts for the Oklahoma City Thunder and other clients, then shot the film in three to four weeks for $700,000.
- To get the 1950s period details right, the crew paid $20,000 to remove the three-point line from the basketball court in the gym where they shot, and found functional switchboards of the era.
