Plot summary
A high level expert committee brings together the Indian Council of Medical Research, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Bharat Biotech. Dr. Balram Bhargava, the ICMR's Director General, leads the project to create an indigenous vaccine. Dr. Priya Abraham, who directs the ICMR-National Institute of Virology, heads a scientific team of bioengineers that includes the virologists Dr. Nivedita Gupta and Dr. Pragya Yadav and the epidemiologists Dr. Raman Gangakhedkar and Dr. Samiran Panda. The group works without enough resources or infrastructure to protect the nation's sixteen million citizens. They retrieve the SARS-CoV-2 strain from tourists arriving in New Delhi, sequence the Vero CCL-81 cells, deposit the genome sequence in the GISAID database, and report a vaccine candidate, BBV152, that triggers neutralizing antibodies in animals.
