Plot summary
A miner and the miner's daughter have gone missing, and Rod Drew is the man sent to trace them. On the train he meets Wabi, a friend from years before, and has to get him clear of card cheats when one of them is killed and Wabi is blamed for it. The pair ride to Fort Minnetaki, buy horses and clothes, and leave ahead of the marshal, who sends the Mounties after them. In a broken-down cabin they come upon two skeletons, and one of them holds a map to a gold mine. At Wabinosh House, the isolated store run by George Newsome, they meet his daughter Felice, Wabi's girl, and shut the map in a safe. A helper at the store sees this, and word of the map reaches Jules LaRocque, who wants it.
