Plot summary
Urbain Donnadieu runs a prefabricated house company, and the grandmother who raised him, Zézette, taught him to worship profit. For years he has been turning money stolen from the business into gold bars. His wife Fleurette is a tax inspector he married only to escape a fine, and his plan is to move the gold to a Swiss bank where she and the French state cannot reach it. He and Zézette set off for Switzerland with the bars set into the walls of a model house on a trailer. Fleurette and her lover Jacques, Urbain's chauffeur and friend, want the gold for themselves.
