Plot summary
At West Lake, a boy named Xu-Xian keeps a pet snake until his parents make him give her up. The snake is Bai-Niang, a young snake goddess who loves him. Years pass, and in a violent storm she is magically transformed into a beautiful princess. Bai-Niang sets out to find Xu-Xian, and the two meet again as adults. Xu-Xian has two panda pets, Panda and Mimi. The story comes from the Chinese folktale Legend of the White Snake, and the characters keep their Chinese-style names. It is the first color anime feature and one of the first anime films to be released in America.

- The White Snake Enchantress was the first color anime feature film and the first theatrical feature made by Toei Animation, released in 1958.
- It was a large-scale project: all 60 staff members produced 13,590 key drawings and more than 65,000 animation cels, and the film took only eight months to finish.
- Toei Doga president Hiroshi Ōkawa chose a Chinese story as the concept blueprint, wanting to strike a tone of reconciliation with the Asian neighbors.
- Rintaro, who became a well-known and respected director of Japanese animation, got his first job in the animation industry at age 17 as an in-betweener on this film.
