Plot summary
Henri Voizot is an elderly, grumpy man whose health has turned shaky, and keeping up his large Paris apartment alone has become too much for him. His son Paul suggests that he take in a lodger, and Henri reluctantly goes along with the idea. The student who arrives is Constance Piponnier, and he lets her have one of the rooms at no charge. In return, he asks her to help him disturb Paul's marriage and upend the family's peace. Constance agrees to the room and to his condition and moves her things in.
