Plot summary
In 1940, with the Depression over and the war begun, Fargo Gondorff comes out of prison and reassembles his old crew. His friend and fellow con artist Kid Colors has been murdered, and Gondorff wants the men behind it. He and his young partner Jake Hooker set up a boxing con aimed at two targets at once: Lonnegan, the banker and gangster still sore over an earlier swindle, and Gus Macalinski, a wealthy local racketeer. Hooker poses as a boxer who means to throw a big fight, and a grifter named Veronica joins them. Macalinski has to be convinced the fighter is worth backing, and Hooker is a little rusty.
