Oleg Tabakov

Biography

Oleg Tabakov was a Russian actor, director and teacher who trained in Saratov, where he was born in 1935, and moved to Moscow in 1953 to study at the Moscow Art Theatre school under Vasili Toporkov. After graduating in 1957 he was among the six founders of the Sovremennik Theatre, where he stayed until 1983 and played leading parts in contemporary Russian plays. Film audiences knew him as Count Nikita Rostov in Sergey Bondarchuk's War and Peace and as the title character of Nikita Mikhalkov's Oblomov (1980). He opened his own studio theater, Tabakerka, in Moscow in 1978, and later played Salieri in Amadeus at the Moscow Art Theatre. Named a People's Actor of the USSR and Russia, he received the USSR and Russian State Prizes for the Arts and, from 2000, served as artistic director of the Moscow Art Theatre. He died in 2018.
