Plot summary
At an estate in Milan, a young man known only as The Visitor becomes a guest of an upper-class family. The household includes the industrialist Paolo, his wife Lucia, their daughter Odetta, their son Pietro, and the housekeeper Emilia. The visitor's presence begins to change each of them. Emilia, the devout housekeeper, is the first to become involved with him. Pietro, sensitive and uncertain, finds comfort in the visitor's attention. Lucia, the mother, is drawn to him. Odetta, sheltered and timid, becomes emotionally intimate with him. Paolo, the father, is also pulled into the visitor's orbit. The visitor asks nothing in return and gives himself to each person.
