Plot summary

In the summer of 1953, Charlie Halliday flies bush jobs out of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. A former wartime pilot, he keeps his distance from the Inuit except when trading with them. On a flight over the Queen Maud Gulf he meets a band of Inuit whose companion, a sick young woman named Kanaalaq, needs a hospital. Charlie suspects tuberculosis and refuses to take her, until they offer him two walrus tusks. In the air his aircraft develops engine trouble, and he crash lands beside a glacial lake. The plane is wrecked, the radio is broken, and the supplies are thin. He is far off his filed route, so no rescue party would know where to search, and the two of them cannot speak each other's language.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Writer-director Charles Martin Smith got the material because he had played Farley Mowat on screen in Never Cry Wolf. The famously Hollywood-shy author then invited Smith to adapt any work of his, and Smith picked the short story Walk Well, My Brother for its simplicity.
