Plot summary
Under General Franco, Spain's dictatorship lasted four decades, and after his death the country's leaders agreed to an amnesty that left extrajudicial killings and other abuses unexamined. Families of people killed and left in mass graves, or never identified, have had no proper burial. Torture survivors, human rights lawyers and the children and grandchildren of the dead now take their cases to an Argentine court, borrowing from the prosecutions of Argentina's military junta. Their Argentine Lawsuit aims to investigate crimes against humanity, identify those responsible and see them sanctioned, and to break a silence that four decades of democracy have not ended. Mothers whose newborns were taken from them under Franco-era eugenics programs also speak, in a country still divided over its past.
