Plot summary
Dunark's king is dead, and so are his pregnant wife and her four-year-old daughter. Nicodemus Ravens, the king's elder son, is found dead drunk with a dagger still in his hand and is named the apparent killer, but under the law he cannot be found guilty unless he admits to the crime. The Master of Law calls in Melussina Tonerre, a witch who can probe another person's mind for shame. To further the trial, Lord Drakan goes himself and collects Melussina's daughter Dina, who has unwillingly inherited the same ability, and the girl is placed before the accused heir to the throne.
