Plot summary
Eight crew members of a downed B-29 are delivered to the medical school of Kyushu Imperial University, where the military orders the staff to cut the American prisoners open. The procedure is meant to answer whether a person can live once their organs are taken out. Suguro, a researcher forced to take part, is troubled by his conscience, while his colleague Toda first scorns that distress and then questions his own lack of feeling under such circumstances. Factional struggles inside the department pull the two young researchers along, and American MPs question two interns and a nurse about their part in the vivisections.
