Plot summary
Rosemonde is a young woman from a working-class background whom the people around her call the Salamander. Her uncle lives with her, and he was wounded in an incident that is told two ways: his rifle may have gone off while he was cleaning it, or she may have shot him. Pierre, a freelance journalist, is hired to write a teleplay about the case, and with time short he asks Paul, a poet of Bohemian habits, to share the work. Pierre wants the facts, and he seeks Rosemonde out for interviews. Paul prefers to picture her and needs little beyond her name. He meets her anyway, and she draws him in as well.
