Plot summary
Michael is a literary editor in New York City. Robert, his partner, is leaving to work in Africa for two years, so on Robert's last day in the country the two are expected at a dinner hosted by his boss, Cecil, and Cecil's wife, Betty. Michael spends part of the day at the apartment of Nick, a former boyfriend living with AIDS, cooking for him. He also visits a record store, where the clerk, Peter, asks about his evening and is given the number of Joan, who is throwing a going-away party. Robert tells Michael the trip overseas was his own decision.
