Plot summary
Claire Ward watches her husband, Charles Dexter Ward, a respected Rhode Island chemical engineer, withdraw into himself and then move out. He has been digging into his family's past, and after a visit to an abandoned ancestral farmhouse near Pawtuxet he buys the place and shuts Claire out. She turns to private investigator John March. He learns that deliveries arrive at the farmhouse at all hours, and Charles, evasive, calls his work routine chemical tests on animal cadavers. When a neighbor is found dead with only a few bone fragments left behind, the police blame an animal. Charles has grown pallid and speaks in an old-fashioned manner, telling Claire and John that in six weeks they will understand.
