Plot summary
Cody, a boy who lives in the Australian Outback, frees and befriends Marahute, a rare golden eagle. Percival C. McLeach, a poacher wanted by the Australian Rangers, is after the bird for money. When McLeach catches Cody in a trap he has set and realizes the boy knows where Marahute nests, he kidnaps him. A mouse Cody freed from the same trap brings word to the Rescue Aid Society in New York, and the society sends its agents, the mice Bernard and Miss Bianca, interrupting Bernard's plan to propose to Bianca. The albatross Wilbur flies them to Australia, where Jake, a hopping mouse and the local operative, guides them in the search for Cody.

- The Rescuers Down Under was the first fully digital feature film, with its entire final elements assembled in a digital environment, and the CAPS process that made it was the first of Disney's collaborations with Pixar.
- Story supervisor Joe Ranft and his team advocated for an Aboriginal Australian child actor to voice Cody, but Jeffrey Katzenberg overrode them, casting "a little white blonde kid" and giving the character a matching design, according to storyboard artist Brenda Chapman.
- Supervising animator Glen Keane studied six eagles at the Peregrine Fund in Boise, Idaho, plus a stuffed eagle and an eagle skeleton, for Marahute; he and his crew enlarged the bird, shrank its head and slowed its wingbeats to about 25-30 percent of an eagle's flight speed, and the 200-feather eagle appears for only seven minutes.
- Under new studio management Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg, a feature-length sequel to The Rescuers was approved, making The Rescuers Down Under the first animated film sequel Disney released theatrically.
- Disney marketed The Rescuers Down Under as its first action-adventure film, with directors Hendel Butoy and Mike Gabriel taking inspiration from Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock and David Lean; it was also the studio's first animated film since Bambi (1942) to have an animal rights and environmental message.
- Voice actor Jim Jordan, who played Orville in the original film, died in April 1988 after a fall at his home; Roy E. Disney then proposed writing Wilbur as Orville's brother as his replacement, with the names referring to the Wright brothers.
