Plot summary
During a drug bust at a loading dock, LAPD detective Stan Zedkov kills Peter Wei, a lieutenant in a Chinatown organization. Peter's father Terence sends for the assassin John Lee, who has killed twice to settle an old debt, and gives him one last assignment: shoot Zedkov's seven-year-old son Stevie in front of the detective. Lee cannot bring himself to do it. Fearing for his mother and sister in China, he asks Alan Chan, a monk at a Buddhist temple, to move them, and seeks a forger, Meg Coburn, for a passport. Wei orders his lieutenant Michael Kogan to hunt Lee and hires the contract killers Ryker and Collins.

- For the night-time finale, shot on a Chinatown-like streetscape of damp, narrow alleys and blinking red neon, Chow Yun-fat shot off 546 rounds of two-fisted gunfire; the repetitive action left his hands blistered and shaking.
- Mira Sorvino had blown out her voice screaming in reshoots of Mimic, and Antoine Fuqua liked the sound so much that he asked her to keep it, which meant she had to yell before each day's filming to burn out her voice.
- The eight-story, nearly condemned Giant Penny building in downtown Los Angeles doubled as three separate sets for the film: a police station interior, a hotel room, and forger Meg Coburn's office.
