Plot summary
The Mooney family lives in a large house in rural England in 1899. Pa, the invalid patriarch, is a retired doctor who claims to be 180 years old. Phoebe, the eldest daughter, runs the household. Mortimer, the eldest son, handles the family finances. Monica, a younger daughter, keeps live rats as pets. Malcolm, the youngest son, is a halfwit, and the family keeps him locked in a room with chickens. Pa has researched for years for a way to break the family curse, and Diana, the youngest daughter, comes home from medical school in Scotland with her new husband, Gerald.
