Plot summary
Abby is an American in Tokyo. Her boyfriend Ethan ends their relationship and leaves for Osaka, and she stays on in the city, speaking little Japanese and working a dull job at a law firm. She wanders into a small ramen shop run by Maezumi and his wife Reiko, who know no English. A bowl of his soup lifts her spirits, and she decides she wants to learn to make ramen. Maezumi has no interest in a student, but she keeps coming back, so he takes her on and sets her to cleaning.
