Plot summary
In Defiance, Ohio, Evelyn Ryan raises ten children while her husband Kelly works a factory job that barely covers the bills. Kelly once sang in a band, but a car accident took his voice, and he drinks and rages. Evelyn supports the household by entering the jingle and slogan contests that consumer product companies ran in the 1950s and 1960s, sometimes submitting entries under her children's names. She wins household appliances and other prizes, and the winnings provoke Kelly, who sees his place as provider under threat.
