The Power of One (1992) on Netflix

Plot summary

Born in 1930 in the Union of South Africa, Peter Keith is raised by his English mother and a Zulu nanny, and their farm loses its cattle to rinderpest. His mother breaks down and he is sent to a conservative Afrikaans-language boarding school, where he is the only Anglo-South African pupil. His Afrikaner classmates, above all Jaapie Botha, single him out with cruelty, and he begins wetting his bed. The sangoma Dabula Manzi helps him overcome the habit, and a chicken he names Mother Courage becomes his closest companion. When war comes to Europe, the Afrikaner boys seize him and the chicken and put him before a mock Nazi court.
