Plot summary
Ben, a twelve-year-old with social anxiety, arrives at the Tom Lerner Water Polo Camp in the summer of 2003. The camp is run by a coach the boys call Daddy Wags, and its social order belongs to Jake and a small circle of popular boys. Eli, an eccentric outsider with a skin disorder, sits at the bottom of that order; Jake and his friends call the condition the plague and keep him at the edge of the group. Eli is ambivalent about his outsider status. Wanting to fit in, Ben works to win Jake's approval, and that effort draws him into the group's bullying and exclusion of Eli.
