Plot summary
The Isle of Devon is an island settled in the seventeenth century by Protestant refugees. Jason Standing leads the community, and his son Jonathan is the great-grandson of its founder, Simeon. Jason catches Jonathan with a married woman and has them both charged with adultery; she is killed by piranhas when she tries to swim. In the hall that serves as church and lawcourt, Jason sentences his son to fifteen years of hard labor. Jonathan escapes the penal colony, but pirates capture him and their captain, LaRoche, forces him to guide them to the island.

- While filming a lake scene that the stunt professionals refused to perform, Christopher Lee claimed Michael Ripper nearly drowned and that he himself was saved only by being 6 ft 4 in tall, while Oliver Reed caught an eye infection that left him hospitalised.
- The BBFC first gave the film an X certificate; after Hammer agreed to cuts it received an A certificate, and still more cuts were needed before it could get the U rating Hammer wanted, with a scene of a young woman attacked by piranhas among the material removed.
- Hammer, by then established as a horror studio, hired Jimmy Sangster to write a pirate film on the sole condition that it take place on land for budget reasons; it became the first of the studio's pirate pictures, followed by Captain Clegg and The Devil-Ship Pirates.
