Plot summary
Paul Manning's investment business is thriving and his marriage to Ruth is a happy one, but he cannot stop noticing other women. At a party, Irma Johnson, a woman in their social circle, flirts with him openly, and Ruth points out afterward how obvious she is. Paul's friend and neighbor Ed Stander, an unrepentant adulterer, notices his restlessness and introduces him to married men who treat affairs as a sport. Over lunches, Ed sets out the technique he swears by: a second car rented under another name, motels chosen well away from home, the right aftershave, an alibi strong enough to leave the house at night. Stories of other husbands illustrate each rule. Paul studies the method, and a new client at his office draws his eye.
