Plot summary

At the Institute for Theoretical Crime, a psychiatric institution for incurably criminal patients, Egon Olsen has spent seventeen years and is allowed out for the first time to take part in a television talk show. Benny Frandsen, who works unreported for a taxi company, and Kjeld Jensen, who lives in a nursing home and uses a wheelchair, watch the broadcast and set off to find him. Kjeld has met Ruth Hansen, with whom he wants to buy an apartment in Málaga. Egon's confiscated plans are kept in the superintendent's safe, and the gang opens the safe to recover them; one plan is to rob the English crown jewels. Hallandsen at the Ministry of Justice also recognizes Egon, and has Holm-Hansen look for him, since a suitcase of confidential Wandenberg documents must not become public.

Actor Poul Bundgaard and director Tom Hedegaard both died during filming; Morten Arnfred took over directing, Tommy Kenter played Kjeld in the remaining scenes with Kurt Ravn providing the voice, and Kjeld was kept to shots from behind or at a distance. The ending had to be rewritten so Kjeld was not in it.
Two more men connected to the film died soon after it was made: Benny Hansen, who played a hospital porter, died two days after filming ended, and Bjørn Watt-Boolsen, the villain in most of the earlier Olsen Gang films, died ten days after opening night.
After the earlier Olsen Gang films came out roughly every year from 1968 to 1981, the series returned with this film after a 17-year break.
