Plot summary
Jim Cole leaves his job as a lawman and brings his family and his friend Sam Potts to a small town in Wyoming, where he has inherited a ranch. The banker, Mr. Benson, tells him the property carries a $675 mortgage, and Jim pays it from nearly all the family savings. Rancher Jed Curry wants the ranch back: Jim's late uncle won it from him in a card game. The cottage on the land is a tumbled-down shack. He asks Wilhelmina Peterson at the general store where to buy cattle to go with his bull Duncan, and Hank takes him to Hazel Squires' place, where animals sell for a dollar each. Hazel finds her pigs missing or dead, and the valley blames Satan, a grizzly bear that raids ranches and kills livestock. Many have tried and failed to kill it.
