Plot summary
Lauren Cochran writes gothic fiction in New York City and lives with agoraphobia. Hoping to overcome her condition, she rents a rural Victorian house in upstate New York from the physicist Daniel Griffith. He shares the house with his grandfather, Colonel Lebrun, who is ailing and who suffers a stroke when he first meets Lauren. After she moves in, a series of strange occurrences begins, and she dreams of women who lounge in its rooms. She also has the feeling of having been in the home before, and she finds a drawing of the house in one of her own books, which is titled The Nesting.
