Plot summary

Debbie Stewart arrives in Los Angeles from Kansas City to work as a flight attendant, still unsure what she wants from her life. She takes a room in a house shared with three other stewardesses, and on her time off she goes out with them or with men she has recently met. Cal is the one who holds her attention, though his behavior turns strange enough that she keeps away from him. Ben Brewster, a wealthy land developer, is drawn to her as well, and although she is at ease in his company she doubts that he genuinely cares for her. When he saves the life of a passenger on one of the women's flights, the household's arrangements grow more tangled.
