Plot summary

Alexandre, an unemployed young intellectual in Paris, lectures his companions on politics and philosophy and recalls the May 1968 protests. He lives with Marie, who works in a dress shop and answers his apathy with anger. He asks his former girlfriend Gilberte to marry him, and she chooses another man. At the Les Deux Magots café a departing woman leaves her number, and the two go on a date. Veronika is a Polish-French anesthesia nurse. She makes advances, and Alexandre responds.
