Plot summary
A girl in a Yorkshire town, Claire talks Danny, her friend, into distracting a shopkeeper so she can take sweets. She gets away; Danny does not, and he becomes one of the children abducted and killed by a serial killer who hid the bodies of his victims on the nearby moor. The killer is convicted and the bodies are never found. Twenty-five years on, Danny's father Bill persuades Claire to help him look for his son's remains on the moor. Bill brings in Alex, a diviner, to point them to an area worth searching, and Claire talks to Thornley, who once joined the 1996 search and calls the ground treacherous. On the first day out, separated from the others, Claire finds a child's shoe in a ditch.
