Plot summary
Gérard Delmas works the docks of Marseille, and every night he returns to the back alley where his sister was raped and then took her own life. Nobody was ever named for the attack, and he has sworn to avenge her. He lives with Bella, who wants more of him than he gives, and with a brother, Frank, who drinks, and a father who has drunk since the death and stopped working. In a bar Gérard meets Newton Channing, a wealthy hedonist, and Newton's sister Loretta, an amateur photographer who drives the docks in a sports car looking for men. Gérard takes her for his way out of the neighborhood, and Bella warns him against her.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Moon in the Gutter (1983)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- When Jean-Jacques Beineix asked Gaumont, the studio that produced The Moon in the Gutter, to prepare an extended recut after Betty Blue's expanded DVD version, he was told it was impossible: Gaumont had destroyed all the extra footage and doubles to free space in its vaults.
- Beineix said the film had first been assembled as 4-hour and 3-hour cuts that expanded the main characters and explained the story's premise more fully; both versions are lost, and the loss reportedly haunted him until his death.
- Although the film flopped on release, it gathered cult admirers, and in the mid-1980s was shown as a fashionable late-night art movie by esoteric clubs such as the Edinburgh Academy Cinema Society.
