Plot summary
Rather than marry the elderly Katisha, the bride his father the Mikado has chosen for him, Nanki-Poo leaves the court in the guise of a poor minstrel. In Titipu he inquires after Yum-Yum, the schoolgirl he loves, and learns that she is the ward of Ko-Ko, who is to marry her that same day. Flirting had been made a capital crime, and the town's answer was to give Ko-Ko, a tailor already condemned for it, the post of Lord High Executioner, while the haughty nobleman Pooh-Bah took every other office. News comes that the Mikado will demote Titipu to a village unless someone is beheaded within the month. Ko-Ko finds Nanki-Poo about to kill himself over Yum-Yum, and the two strike a bargain.
