Plot summary
Anne-Marie Gratigny lives in comfort as the wife of Gilbert, a celebrated plastic surgeon, with a house, staff and money. The marriage itself has failed: Gilbert thinks only of his work and gives her no attention. She has a lover, Léo, a ship builder who is chasing a large project in China and presses her to leave Gilbert and join him. After a day spent preparing that departure, Anne-Marie returns home to find the family gathered and learns that Gilbert died in a car crash. Her failed marriage is over, and she looks forward to seeing more of Léo and making the trip, but her relatives, especially her son Christophe, settle in at the villa, certain that she is in shock. She must play the grieving widow and hide how she feels.
