Plot summary

The Marquise of O. is a widow in a northern Italian town, where her father, the Colonel, commands the citadel. When Russian forces storm the town, the Count, their commander, saves her from a group of soldiers and has her put to bed. When she wakes, the troops have gone, and she wishes to thank him. The Count then turns up at her family's home and asks her to marry him. Her family hesitates, since she had decided not to marry again and they say the two barely know each other. He is expected at a post in Naples and wants her answer before he leaves. Once he has gone, the signs of a pregnancy appear that she cannot account for.
