Plot summary
Lili, thirteen, is sent by her mother to live with the father she has not seen since she was an infant. She arrives with Hagen, a mixed-breed dog, and will not part with him. A large fee the Hungarian government imposes on mongrels makes keeping him expensive, and her father offers to buy her a purebred instead, which Lili reads as proof he does not understand her. Fearing her father will send Hagen away while she is at school, she brings the dog to her music class, where he causes chaos. The teacher threatens to throw her out of the class unless the dog goes outside, so Lili strikes out into the city with Hagen. Her father, alerted by the teacher, finds them, then drives Hagen to the outskirts and abandons him.
