Darby Jones

Biography

Darby Jones was an American actor who was born in Los Angeles and got his first screen work in an uncredited part in the Tarzan serial Tarzan the Fearless (1933). His best known part was the zombie-like figure Carrefour in the Val Lewton horror picture I Walked with a Zombie (1943), a character that drew praise and analysis and that the historian Alexander Nemerov called a dominant screen presence. Two years later he took a similar part, the zombie Kolaga, in Zombies on Broadway (1945). His other roles include Bomba in Tarzan Escapes (1936), Stringbeans Johnson in Broken Strings in 1940, a Swahili chief in Tarzan's New York Adventure in 1942, and a Masai warrior in The Macomber Affair (1947). Writing in 1991, the critic Danny Peary said Jones was typecast more than the typical black actor and restricted to jungle pictures. He died in 1986.
