Plot summary

AH-64D Apache pilots begin their training at Fort Irwin in California and Fort Polk in Louisiana, alongside ground forces and other military assets for the unconventional fight ahead in Iraq. Camp Taji becomes home for the 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, across the fifteen months of The Surge, with its pilots and ground crews living under daily rocket and mortar fire. When weather allows, crews fly around the clock to support ground operations that keep expanding, and no mission is routine because the enemy keeps changing. An air weapons team is sent to An Najaf after an Iraqi Army convoy is attacked at the fortified compound of Diya Abdul Zahra Kadim, where the Soldiers of Heaven are based. CW4 Keith Yoakum and CW2 Jason DeFrenn serve as informal leaders among the pilots and ground crews.
