Plot summary

Donald Brocklebank, an aristocrat facing bankruptcy, lives at Longleigh House with his wife Nancy, who is terminally ill and needs constant care, and their adult son James, who is schizophrenic and also requires looking after. Money is nearly gone, so Donald arranges to sell the manor to fund an operation for Nancy. Before he leaves to handle the sale, he puts the family nurse, Mary, in charge of Nancy's care. James has other ideas about his own role in the household and sets out to show his father that he can tend to his mother without help. He stops taking his own prescribed medicine, and his condition begins to worsen while his mother remains in the house.
