Plot summary
Oharu is a fifty-year-old prostitute whom men no longer seek, and she looks back on her life. The daughter of a samurai, she serves at the imperial court in Kyoto, where Katsunosuke, a page beneath her, courts her. Their love is discovered, and she and her family are banished. A messenger searching for a mistress for Lord Matsudaira finds Oharu, and she is sold to him in the hope that she will bear a son. She does, and once her purpose is served she is sent away.
