Plot summary
Markussi, an orphan, lives in an Inuit clan in northern Canada with his younger sister Mipoulok and can talk to animals. He keeps his shaman powers hidden, not wanting to become like Croolik, the clan's shaman. Croolik has turned away from the goddess Sedna and called on the spirit of darkness, and the animals vanish from the clan's lands, leaving little food. The clan chooses three young people to look for Sarila, a legendary country where game is said to be plentiful: Markussi, his friend Putulik, the chief's son, and Apik, who was promised to Putulik in childhood. Saya, a healer who lives apart, takes in Mipoulok and her dog. The three leave with sled dogs and Kimi, Apik's lemming.
