Plot summary

In 1835 Paris, the Vicomte de Prony visits La Vellini, a kept woman born in Malaga, and tells her that her long affair with Ryno de Marigny is over, since he is about to marry. Ryno visits her himself that day, resolved to see his mistress once more. The bride is Hermangarde, the granddaughter of the Marquise de Flers, who arranged the match and believes the union will be good for both Ryno and her innocent granddaughter. The Comtesse d'Artelles, her friend, is doubtful, and says that Vellini has been in Ryno's life for ten years. Before she gives her blessing, the Marquise makes Ryno tell the whole history of the affair, which began ten years earlier in Baden.
